YOUR MEASUREMENTS

Enter the compacted base depth from your project specification. Ask your supplier for the additional loose material required; enter that percentage as the allowance.

Bag sizes, weight & pricing +

Bag counts and prices apply to the main material only. Enter your supplier’s density to calculate weight.

Compare bags with loose delivery +

Use the bag size and units above. Compare the same product at your supplier’s quoted prices. Enter small-bag or bulk-bag contents above and its price below. Include each delivery charge below. Use prices including VAT throughout.

Bulk-bag quote · optional third option

Compare small bags, bulk bags and a loose load side by side. Each price is optional; include delivery once for each option.

Minimum and increment use the bulk quote unit. For half-tonne orders, enter 0.5 as the increment. Zero uses the exact estimate. VAT is not added automatically. If delivery is included in a quote, enter zero for that charge. Check unloading and access separately. Weight quotes need your supplier’s bulk density.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Getting a useful estimate

Enter the compacted layer depth from your project specification and the loose-material allowance confirmed by your supplier.

Measure the space you need to fill. Rectangles use length and width; circles use diameter. For several sections, choose combined areas and add rectangles, then subtract exclusions. The final area must be greater than zero.

Compacted depth and loose orders

Measure the area and enter the compacted Type 1 depth from your construction specification. The first volume is the finished layer. An allowance increases that volume to an order estimate; ask the supplier what allowance is appropriate.

There is no built-in compaction percentage or density. Ground conditions and the load above the base determine the construction design. This tool estimates quantities from that design.

Type 1, sub-base and hardcore

Wickes describes its named Type 1 product as a graded crushed aggregate for sub-bases. A supplier’s description of hardcore alone does not establish that it is the specified Type 1 product. Confirm the grading and product specification before comparing quotes.

Keep surface gravel, Type 1 and bedding material in separate calculations. Their densities and depths can differ.

Round up the order you can buy

Enter supplier density in kg/m³ to calculate tonnes or weight-labelled bags. Wickes lists this jumbo bag as 800 kg, with possible moisture-related variation. Use the contents quoted by your supplier.

For loose delivery, enter the minimum load and ordering increment in tonnes or cubic metres, matching the quote. Both prices should include VAT. Bag and loose delivery charges are separate inputs.

Volume formula

Volume = area × depth × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

Allowance applies once to each volume layer. No density or compaction factor is assumed. If buying by weight, enter the density for your supplier’s product in the units shown.
