Getting a useful estimate
A product sold as pea gravel may have a different bulk density from crushed stone. Use the supplier’s figure for weight estimates.
Measure the space you need to fill. Rectangles use length and width; circles use diameter. For several sections, choose combined areas and add rectangles, then subtract exclusions. The final area must be greater than zero.
Check the stone before comparing prices
Pea gravel is a product name, not a fixed density. Gravelshop’s linked 3/8-inch white pea gravel is rounded and does not interlock. Ask your supplier whether the stone suits your planned use, including any edging or base requirements.
Compare quotes for the same size and product. For a weight quote, request the bulk density and confirm whether “ton” means a US short ton, imperial long ton or metric tonne.
Compare bags with a bulk order
Open the quote comparison above and enter a bag size, bag price, bulk price and delivery charge. Minimum orders and delivery can make bulk more expensive for a small path. The tool rounds bags upward and shows extra material from each order.
For an arithmetic example, a 12-by-4-foot area at 2 inches deep contains 8 cubic feet. That is 16 half-cubic-foot bags, or about 0.296 cubic yards before any allowance. The example depth is not a construction recommendation.
Ask before arranging delivery
Confirm the exact product, order unit, minimum load, delivery charge and where the supplier can unload. Keep a base-layer order separate from the decorative surface quantity.
Volume formula
Allowance applies once to each volume layer. No density or compaction factor is assumed. If buying by weight, enter the density for your supplier’s product in the units shown.
